By Emerging Artist Sophia Bharmal
Sophia Bharmal is an Asian artist, based in London, with a background in architecture. Bharmal focuses on creating oil pastel pieces inspired by her Indian heritage, and the make-belief architectural landscapes that encase her memories of India. She chooses to display traditional tectonics found in Indian architecture, and focuses on elevating the everyday lives of Indian women to bring their actions to the foreground, without sexualising them through a male gaze. Her take on the grandeur elements of Rajasthan and Mughal architecture, and the everyday moments of normality to express the her experiences, show her wearning for an escape from her everyday experiences of London life. With each of her pieces holding fragments of nostalgia along with burst of vibrant colour.
